Colonsay
The RHS has supported the community on Colonsay by helping
them develop a housing strategy for the island and working with them
to persuade Scottish Homes (now Communities Scotland) to agree to fund
4 housing association houses for rent. We have also provided help to
3 families who are building their own homes. We conducted a housing
needs survey on the island which demonstrated that real housing need
was 9 times greater than the waiting list figure. We are working with
Colonsay Estate and Argyll & Bute Council to improve estate houses on
the island. We are also developing plans with the community to build
a house to provide accommodation for incoming families to boost the
island’s population.
